About the Book

Practical Geography is a compilation of ideas, concepts and experimentations based on an intensive geographical study and research. This book deals with the cartography branch of geography which has developed through a systematic approach to explain the techniques of cartography and surveying, using mathematical and statistical methods based on an intensive geographical study and research. It further emphasizes on the development of a pragmatic approach and a scientific temperament towards the concept of ‘space’ as a whole, using cartographic tools.

It also highlights the concepts of spatial relationships and geographical surroundings using mapping techniques with a kaleidoscope of real-time applications. The book intends to facilitate the readers in cultivating a scientific approach towards basic cartographic techniques and mapping. Each section of the book comprehends to the systematized knowledge of cartographic tools, techniques and surveying. The book also has some relevant sections on remote sensing and GIS to bridge the gap between the gurukul era of ancient geography and the digital era of the present world.

About the Author / Editor

Monika Kannan is Professor and Head, Department of Geography, Sophia Girls’ College (Autonomous), Ajmer. She is engaged in teaching and research for the last 18 years, contributing specifically in the areas of Crime Mapping and Analysis, Geopolitics, Gender Studies, GIS and Remote Sensing, Juvenile Delinquencies and Border Disputes. She has to her credit eight books and 64 research papers published in journals and magazines of national and international repute. 
Dr Kannan has received several awards such as the Certificate of Excellence by France Congress, Paris, Certificate of Merit by Rajasthan Public Service Commission, Government of Rajasthan and National Young Geographer Award for her exemplary contributions in the field of research. Dr Kannan is the Chief Editor of Khoj – The International Peer Reviewed Journal of Geography, besides being on the editorial boards of several other journals. 

Shilpi Yadav is an Assistant Professor, Department of Geography, Sophia Girls’ College (Autonomous), Ajmer. She has a teaching and research experience of six years. The major fields of her interest are Environment, Climate Change, Urban Infrastructure, Border Disputes and Geopolitics. She has published a number of research papers and has also acted as a resource person for a Geospatial Training Programme.
